DMAAST: Smart Manufacturing Gets a Boost – EEIP Embraces the Future of Flexibility

European manufacturing is under increasing pressure to become more flexible, resilient and sustainable. Global supply chain disruptions, rapidly changing customer demands and the transition towards climate-neutral industry are challenging manufacturers to rethink how products are designed, produced and delivered.

The DMaaST project (Digital Manufacturing as a Service) has been launched to help address these challenges by developing a new generation of digitally connected manufacturing systems. Bringing together leading industrial companies, research organisations and technology providers from across Europe, the project will demonstrate how advanced digital technologies can make manufacturing more adaptable, efficient and resilient.

As a project partner, EEIP will support the communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities that help ensure the project’s innovations reach manufacturers, policymakers and the wider European industrial community.

Rethinking Manufacturing for a Digital Future

Traditional manufacturing systems often rely on fixed production lines that can be difficult to adapt when markets, products or supply chains change.

DMaaST aims to introduce a more flexible approach through the concept of Digital Manufacturing as a Service (DMaaS), where manufacturing resources can be connected, configured and managed more dynamically using digital technologies.

By combining advanced data sharing, digital twins, artificial intelligence and modular production systems, the project seeks to create manufacturing environments that respond more quickly to changing business needs while improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The result is a production model capable of supporting greater flexibility without compromising productivity or product quality.

Developing Practical Solutions for European Industry

The project focuses on several technological building blocks that together will support the future of smart manufacturing.

Digital twin technologies will enable manufacturers to create virtual representations of production systems, allowing processes to be monitored, analysed and optimised before changes are implemented on the factory floor.

Modular production concepts will allow manufacturing systems to be reconfigured more easily, helping companies adapt to changing customer requirements and shorter product life cycles.

Advanced data analytics and intelligent decision-support tools will improve operational efficiency, while stronger digital integration across value chains will help manufacturers become more resilient to future disruptions.

Together, these innovations aim to demonstrate how digitalisation can strengthen both the competitiveness and sustainability of European manufacturing.

Collaboration Across Europe

DMaaST is part of the Horizon Europe-funded AMiMO Cluster, bringing together organisations with expertise in manufacturing, digital technologies, automation and industrial innovation.

The project recognises that transforming manufacturing requires more than developing new technologies. Success also depends on collaboration between industry, research organisations, technology providers and policymakers to ensure that innovative solutions can be adopted widely across Europe’s industrial ecosystem.

Knowledge sharing, industrial validation and stakeholder engagement therefore form an important part of the project’s activities alongside the technical developments.

EEIP Supporting Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

Innovation creates value only when knowledge reaches the people who can use it.

Within DMaaST, EEIP contributes its expertise in communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement to ensure that project results are communicated clearly and effectively throughout the project’s lifetime.

Working closely with the consortium, EEIP will support the development of communication materials, organise stakeholder engagement activities and promote the project’s achievements through digital channels, events and European networks.

By translating complex technical developments into accessible and relevant information, EEIP helps connect research with manufacturers, policymakers and organisations interested in the future of digital manufacturing.

Supporting Europe’s Industrial Transformation
