Trends in stationary battery storage
Five young companies - all from the stationary battery storage sector - have received financial support for their further growth in the last 12 months. This proves that this market continues to grow with innovative developments and technologies. Industry and commerce are deploying battery storage to complement renewable energy generation. In this article, I discuss the importance of battery storage and introduce the five companies with their developments.
Investments in battery storage companies in the last 12 months.
Investment in emerging battery storage companies is not unique to the automotive sector. In stationary or other applications for chemical energy storage, the market is also developing. Five young, innovative German companies have received high financial support from investors for their growth within the last 12 months.
These companies show which developments are or will become important in the battery storage industry.
Stabl Energy: Decentralized battery inverters
STABL Energy, a fledgling company based in Munich, Germany, replaces the central inverter of battery storage systems with power electronics it has developed itself. They connect these directly to the individual battery modules. This design increases efficiency and reliability, while reducing energy losses. Further advantages are offered by the low-voltage modules that can be used and increase the safety of installers during installation and maintenance.
The innovation means that the battery modules used no longer have to have the same capacity. Different modules can be connected together. This makes it possible, for example, to extend the service life of used modules from electric cars.

The technology fully utilizes battery module capacity, making it significantly more efficient than using conventional inverters. Through regular updates of the energy management software, customers receive an improvement in the functions of their batteries.
STABL Energy, founded in 2019, successfully completed a seed funding round of €4.5 million at the end of 2021. In the meantime, several investors are participating in the TU Munich spin-off. In 2022, the company will begin broad marketing of its product, targeting energy storage manufacturers.
Tesvolt: Commercial storage with a broad range of applications
As an expert for storage systems with capacities ranging from 10 kWh to 100 MWh, TESVOLT GmbH from Wittenberg offers battery storage systems for various applications. They range from increasing self-consumption and peak load capping, to charging station control and grid services, to PV-diesel hybrid systems and off-grid operation.
One of TESVOLT's special features is the in-house quality control that all lithium battery cells must pass. A proprietary development is the intelligent cell control system, the Active Battery Optimizer, for monitoring the charging, discharging and condition of the cells.
New installations are in the area of hydrogen generation to ensure a constant supply with electricity from solar and wind power. For the future, TESVOLT is positioning itself as an inductive charging company.
In November 2021, TESVOLT closed an equity financing round of approximately EUR 40 million. The funds are provided by a consortium of investors led by the Liechtenstein Group - a group of companies owned by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein. They plan to use the additional capital for further international growth and innovative product developments.
Instagrid: Portable storage for commercial use
A mobile power supply no longer has to mean long cables with trip hazards or noisy diesel generators with high greenhouse gas emissions. The instagrid GmbH from Ludwigsburg offers a mobile power supply for professional use based on a battery storage. The storage unit has a 230V connection for any electrical device, a capacity of 2.1 kWh and is portable with a weight of 20 kg.
The mobile storage can replace fossil-fueled generators and long power cables on construction sites, catering or film shoots, for example. This increases safety and comfort at work and enables mobile working without a power connection at many locations.
instagrid GmbH has received 29 million euros from investors in a financing round. New investors from the USA and the existing investors participated in the financing. The startup plans to use the additional capital to tap international markets and expand digital services.
Twaice: Battery analytics with digital twin
Munich-based Twaice Technologies GmbH helps energy storage operators generate the most value from their storage systems with analytics software. With the software, they always have an eye on the battery's condition and can respond proactively to potential faults or warranty issues. This reduces the risk of premature storage failure. To analyze the data, they combine their software with artificial intelligence.
Simulations of different operating strategies with a digital twin help players along the entire value chain to derive the greatest possible benefit from the various use cases.
As part of a new round of financing, a new investor is participating in TWAICE Technologies GmbH with around 23 million euros. Existing investors have increased their contributions, bringing the startup's funding to $45 million. Their goal is to use the additional funds to further develop their battery storage analysis platform and expand their presence in international markets.
Accure: analytics software in the cloud
Battery systems consist of a complex interplay of individual components that must fit together. ACCURE ensures safety and effectiveness in the production and operation of batteries. The cloud platform stores battery data and analyzes it in real time to monitor and optimize operations. Manufacturers can use this data to improve the system design of their batteries.
Batteries age differently. ACCURE's analytics can help manufacturers significantly improve lifespan and performance and offer a longer warranty.
Accure Battery Intelligence GmbH, based in Aachen, Germany, has raised €6.8 million from various investors in a financing round. It plans to use this to open an office in the U.S., among other things.
Wide range of applications for stationary battery storage systems
There is a very wide range of applications for stationary battery storage systems. They support the energy supply with renewable energies, secure and stabilize the ongoing power supply and help to reduce costs. With the new development of decentralized battery inverters, providers will be able to connect different cells together in the future, fully utilize their capacity and use used cells from electric cars.
Another innovation enables mobile use of storage in applications that previously required long cables or diesel generators, while other players are capturing battery operating data and analyzing it in real time to improve operations and extend lifetimes.
The progress in battery storage and the growing interest in it are reflected in the investments in the companies mentioned above. They have received more than 100 million euros in the last 12 months for the development of new products and their further growth.
Expo for decarbonised Industries > Energy Storage 2022
From September 20-22, 2022, the decarbXpo trade show will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, as a continuation and expansion of ENERGY STORAGE EUROPE. It combines in one event the comprehensive range of energy storage systems with solutions for industrial and commercial decarbonization. A conference on decarbonization in selected industrial and commercial segments will be held in parallel.
It is part of a network of trade fairs from different sectors and thus offers great potential for addressing new energy technology target groups. glasstec takes place at the same time - its visitors can visit decarbXpo free of charge. The network includes other leading global trade fairs for the energy-intensive industries of glass, plastics and metals.
