
A new battery concept could lead to safe all-solid-state batteries. The idea is based on the long-sought goal of using pure lithium metal as one of the batterys two electrodes, the anode. An electrolyte allows lithium ions to travel back and forth during the charging and discharging cycles of the battery. If combined with new concepts for lightweight versions of the other cathode, this work could reduce the overall weight of lithium-ion batteries. For example, the team hopes to lead to cellphones that could be charged just once every three days, without making the phones heavier or bulkier. "In our case," Ju Li says, "it is truly all solid. There is no liquid or gel in it of any kind" The new system could also lead to safer anodes that weigh only a quarter as much as their conventional counterparts in the battery-bulkier than their traditional counterparts for the same amount of battery storage capacity for cellphones.
