Transitioning industrial zones into hubs for circularity

The Horizon-Europe Innovation Action project titled ‘Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: from Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity (IS2H4C)' is a transformative initiative led by Devrim Murat Yazan’s team at University of Twente. With a substantial funding of 20 million euros from the European Commission, raising the total to 23.5 million euros, this project entails the collaboration of 35 partners to implement sustainable regional development models in four key European hubs located in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, and Türkiye. The primary goal is achieving near zero emission regions by strategically promoting industrial symbiosis and deploying systemic symbiotic partnerships between industries, harnessing innovative technologies like carbon capture and electrolysis. IS2H4C's approach involves different industries working together to realize the EU's vision of a digital-led, climate-neutral, and sustainable economy. Green hydrogen and eco-methanol production, repurposing carbon dioxide, and enhancing resource efficiency are among the core strategies to be pursued within the project's four-year timeframe, starting in 2024. This project aligns with the European Green Deal and the Fit-for-55 package, aiming to set a new benchmark in circular economy practices while fostering an industrial-urban-rural symbiosis. IS2H4C also includes integrating novel financial models and social innovation approaches to bolster the circularity market through public and private investments.
