A intersecção entre a energia e a IA: perspectivas da Conferência Mundial da AIE

A Conferência Global inaugural sobre Energia e IA, organizada pela Agência Internacional de Energia (AIE), identificou a relação crítica entre energia e IA, reconhecendo que, embora as tecnologias de IA exijam eletricidade substancial, também oferecem oportunidades significativas para otimizar os sistemas energéticos. A AIE planeia publicar um relatório exaustivo em 2025 para aprofundar esta relação. A procura de eletricidade está a ultrapassar a procura global de energia, sendo a utilização crescente de ar condicionado, a eletrificação dos transportes e os centros de dados citados como principais motores. Só os centros de dados são responsáveis por um consumo significativo de eletricidade em regiões como a Virgínia e a Irlanda. O papel transformador da IA no sector da energia inclui o avanço da tecnologia das baterias, a otimização da infraestrutura energética e a assistência na adoção de energias renováveis. Nomeadamente, os desenvolvimentos da IA estão a ajudar na gestão eficiente da rede e na integração de fontes renováveis, fundamentais para a transição para sistemas de energia mais limpos. As partes interessadas globais de empresas como a Google e a Microsoft delinearam as suas iniciativas que tiram partido da IA para a sustentabilidade, incluindo o aumento da eficiência energética dos centros de dados e o apoio à integração das energias renováveis. A utilização da IA pela Google ajuda na avaliação do potencial renovável e na otimização da rede, enquanto a Microsoft se concentra em soluções de IA colaborativas para alcançar a descarbonização. A conferência sublinhou a importância do diálogo e da colaboração entre as várias partes interessadas para alinhar a IA com as necessidades do sector energético. À medida que a IA evolui, a sua integração com os sistemas energéticos será crucial para um futuro sustentável, exigindo inovação, reforma política e desenvolvimento de infra-estruturas.
