TRANSFORMATIVE EFFORTS IN RESHAPING EUROPE'S ELECTRICAL LANDSCAPE: INSIGHTS FROM THE ONENET PROJECT FINAL EVENT

On March 5, 2024, the culmination of years of innovation, collaboration, and transformative efforts in reshaping Europe’s electrical landscape was celebrated at the OneNet Project Final Event in Brussels. This landmark occasion brought together experts, stakeholders, and enthusiasts from different European countries, both in-person at Bluepoint and online, to reflect on the journey and envision the future of the European electricity system.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Antonello Monti of Fraunhofer, setting the stage for a day filled with insightful discussions and visionary presentations. Ferdinando Bosco and Antonello Monti shared the bold vision of OneNet, emphasizing the seamless integration of all actors across countries to optimise energy management and create an open and fair market structure.

Keynote speaker Mark van Stiphout from the European Commission underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving these ambitious goals. The subsequent panel discussions delved into critical aspects of the project, ranging from TSO-DSO coordination and market design to customer engagement and data spaces.

One notable session focused on TSO-DSO coordination and market design, moderated by Helena Gerard from VITO. Panelists, including representatives from the European Commission, E.DSO, and ENTSO-E, provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in aligning transmission and distribution system operations while fostering market efficiency.

During the networking sessions, attendees had the opportunity to engage with representatives from demo clusters, showcasing innovative solutions from Northern, Southern, Western, and Eastern Europe. These demos highlighted the practical applications of OneNet's principles, from demand response to distributed generation, illustrating the project's tangible impact on the ground. The discussions continued with panels focusing on customer engagement and data spaces, exploring ways to empower consumers and leverage data for enhanced grid operations. Experts from various organizations, including EUI, Digital4Grids, and BEUC, shared their perspectives on the evolving role of consumers and the importance of data management in driving the energy transition.

In addition to the discussions on customer engagement and data spaces, it's imperative to highlight the significance of initiatives like EDDIE in the context of the OneNet project. EDDIE, the European Distributed Data Infrastructure for Energy, addresses the challenges posed by the lack of standardized procedures for accessing energy data across the EU. By introducing a decentralized, distributed, open-source Data Space, EDDIE aligns with the objectives of the EU Smart Grids Task Force on Interoperability. This innovative approach significantly reduces data integration costs and fosters the development of new data-driven services within and beyond the energy sector. With an Administrative Interface for In-house Data Access (AIIDA), EDDIE ensures secure and reliable access to valuable real-time data, thereby facilitating the seamless operation and competition of energy service companies in a unified European market. EDDIE's contribution complements the efforts of projects like OneNet in reshaping Europe's electrical landscape and advancing towards a more sustainable and interconnected energy future.

The event concluded with a forward-looking session on the roadmap for the way forward, moderated by Peter Hermans, where panelists outlined strategic priorities and next steps for realising the vision of OneNet.

In summary, the OneNet Project Final Event in Brussels was a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and shared vision in reshaping Europe's electrical landscape. As we embark on the next phase of this journey, the insights and momentum generated from this event will serve as a guiding light towards a more sustainable, resilient, and consumer-centric energy future.
